Books are often large and heavy. You're fine if it's just a paperback, but it's nice to be able to have larger textbook sized hardcovers share the same portability. As for reading one book at a time, I'm usually reading one fictional work and two or three non-fiction at once while also using a large number of additional books as reference material. It might not be the average way to read, but for those of us who go that way any extra help is nice.
